Public Transport (OV-chipkaart & Signs)
Master the trains, trams, and buses without getting fined or lost.
The Netherlands has an incredible public transport system, collectively known as OV (Openbaar Vervoer). Whether you are using a plastic OV-chipkaart or tapping your debit card (OVpay), knowing these essential words will save you from stressful moments at the station.
1. Essential Transit Vocabulary
Before you step onto a platform, you need to crack the code on Dutch transit signs.

2. The Golden Rules of Tapping In & Out
When using the gates or the card readers on buses and trams, you will hear the machines beep. You must remember to use your card at both ends of your journey.
- Inchecken (To check in): Tapping your card at the start of your trip. You will hear one short beep.
- Uitchecken (To check out): Tapping your card when you exit. You will hear two quick beeps.
3. Survival Phrases for the Platform
If you are unsure if you are on the right train or if it stops at your station, use these quick phrases to ask a fellow passenger or an NS conductor.
- “Rijdt deze trein naar Schiphol?”
(Does this train go to Schiphol?) - “Stopt de bus bij het Centraal Station?”
(Does the bus stop at Central Station?) - “Is deze zitplaats vrij?”
(Is this seat free?) - “Pardon, ik moet er hier uit.”
