Dutch Notes

Prepositions are those little words that tell you where something is. Sounds simple, right? Except languages rarely agree on them!

If you translate them literally from English to Dutch, you might end up saying you are standing on a room instead of in it.

Boven	Above / Over	De lamp hangt boven de tafel.	The lamp hangs above the table.
Naast	Next to / Beside	Ik sta naast mijn auto.	I am standing next to my car.
Achter	Behind	De tuin ligt achter het huis.	The garden is behind the house.
Voor	In front of	Er staat een boom voor het raam.	There is a tree in front of the window.
Tussen	Between	Het hotel staat tussen twee winkels.	The hotel is between two shops.

⚠️ The Tricky Part: “Op” vs. “In” In English, you get on a bus, on a train, or on a plane. In Dutch, if you are inside a vehicle, you are almost always in it!

🇬🇧 I am on the train.

🇳🇱 Ik zit in de trein. (Literally: I sit in the train).

The exception? Op de fiets (on the bike) and op de motor (on the motorcycle), because you are physically sitting on top of them!
